The old Sloan’s has been revived by Colin Barr’s operation (Salty Dog, Republic Bier Halle et al) and was formally relaunched on Bastille Day as the Bastille Taverne. Why the name had to change is unclear, but the interiors have retained their historic, Edwardian elegance. The burger is just one option on a menu that includes croquet monsieur, grilled salmon and salad nicoise. But it is a solid choice: char-grilled bun with salad and tomato, plus the option of crispy – salty – pancetta and Emmental cheese toppings on a robust beef patty, served with a nice pile of skinny chips.
